Commissioner Shellito

Commissioner and family in New York for the Ellis Island Medal of HonorSpring has definitely arrived in St. Paul. As I look outside my office window I see the leaves in full-bloom with varying colors of green, white, and purple. I also saw a lone turkey walking through our parking lot acting as though she owned the property and was wondering why all the cars were parked in her area. I’ve always been amazed at how well we and nature have adapted to each other.

This month I would like to highlight three major areas of activity. Each area has its own unique attributes and thus has kept the agency on its toes.

First is the current legislative session and the funding – or lack of for our operations to include the new Duluth Veterans Cemetery operations and funding to repair the Minnehaha Creek Bridge - the main access point to the Minneapolis Home, including expedient arrival of medical and safety equipment if needed. The original bridge was built in 1908 and is classified as ‘historical,’ which means it is to be repaired, not replaced.

Second is a desire within the legislature for more State Veterans Homes. The three communities that have expressed strong interest include Montevideo, Bemidji, and Fillmore County. While I am excited that the legislature is seeking more Homes, the process requires full commitment, financial and other, of both current and future legislators as well as federal support.

Third is the upcoming Memorial Day ceremonies. Memorial Day is a special day for all of us. Let us all take that moment of silence to pay respects and give honor to those who gave their all for this great nation.

On a personal note, I have been honored by being selected as a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. This is a prestigious award with many well-known national leaders being recipients. I will be taking my wife and two daughters to New York City for the ceremony. They will take good care of me!

So, in summary, I am very proud of MDVA and those who work here. They truly are committed to caring for all Veterans, regardless of needs. There has been tremendous growth in the skills and proficiencies of all. And as always - thank you for your support and all that you do in the care and support to all Veterans and their loved ones. Using the phrase “Everything Connects to Everything,” you can be proud of Minnesota and your commitment to Veterans. You make a difference!
