State to Activate 'Veteran Rapid Response Team'

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – A new initiative will provide immediate assistance to homeless Veterans during the 2016 Point-in-Time (PIT) count, the annual one-day count to identify everyone experiencing homelessness in Minnesota. This year the PIT count will be conducted January 28, and for the first time the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) is organizing a Veteran Rapid Response Team and crisis shelter to assist any homeless Veterans identified through this outreach.
Coast Guard Tribute Painting Displayed at Duluth Depot

DULUTH, Minn. - The Veterans Memorial Hall in the Duluth Depot, will unveil Minnesota artist Charles Kapsner’s Coast Guard tribute painting, the third painting in a series of five honoring each military service. Kapsner, who was commissioned by the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery Association to create artwork for the State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota, has developed the “Looking to the Past, Present, and Future: A Veterans Educational Historic Project,” commonly referred to as the Veterans Art Project. The temporary exhibit will display the large-scale 8 by 10 foot oil painting and host appearances by the artist and members of the Coast Guard Honor Guard throughout the weekend. The exhibit goes through Monday, January 25, after which the painting will be sent to Little Falls for permanent display at the State Veterans Cemetery.

MDVA Announces Veteran Housing Rental Incentive

One of the biggest struggles in the State’s race to end Veteran Homelessness has been identifying landlords willing to give homeless Veterans a second chance. The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs announced today that landlords who rent to Veterans currently listed on the Minnesota Homeless Veterans Registry could be eligible for a $1,000 incentive.

Innovation Awards Recognize Program for Homeless Veterans

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs’ Homeless Veterans Registry is among 10 winners of this year’s Minnesota State Government Innovation Awards. The awards, which recognize innovation and service redesign in state government, are hosted by the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs. MDVA’s efforts to end Veteran homelessness using the Homeless Veterans Registry will be recognized in an award ceremony today at the Minnesota History Center.
