WHAT:

Landlords, property owners and the media are invited to attend a reception with Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges to learn more about the important role landlords play in housing Veterans in our community.

Communities and mayors from around the state, together with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and partners, jointly committed to end Veteran homelessness statewide by the end of this year. As part of this commitment, in early 2015 the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and many community partners launched a statewide /mdva/resources/homelessnessandprevention/homelessveteranregistry.jspHomeless Veterans Registry focused on housing Veterans experiencing homelessness. Since that time more than 200 Veterans on the Registry have been housed. Still, there are over 160 Veterans on the Registry in the Twin Cities today. Although Veterans on the Registry have the have income or assistance to pay for housing and maintain stability, one of the surprising struggles has been identifying landlords willing to give these Veterans a second chance.

At the Keys for Heroes reception landlords will be able to learn more about renting to Veterans on the Registry, including the benefits of guaranteed rent, tenant screening, working with a single point-of-contact or case manager, and how to join this effort. There will also be a chance to answer questions about funding sources, talk with other landlords and hear directly from Veterans who are on their journey home. The goal of ending Veteran homelessness in Minnesota is within reach, and landlords are they key to make it to the finish line.

WHO:

Speakers will include:

  • Previously homeless Veterans and Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner
  • Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges
  • Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans
  • Minnesota Multi Housing Association and HousingLink
WHEN: Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11
6 - 7:30 p.m.
WHERE:     Wilder Center, 451 Lexington Parkway North, St. Paul, Minn. 55104
