Members of the community and the press are invited to attend a ceremony recognizing Combat Wounded Veterans Purple Heart Day on Monday, August 7 at the Minneapolis Veterans Home beginning at 11 a.m. The ceremony will include remarks by Willie Pargo, Commander Military Order of the Purple Heart – Department of Minnesota, Mike McElhiney, Chief of Staff Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and other Purple Heart recipients. Residents at the Minneapolis Veterans Home who are Purple Heart recipients will also be recognized. The ceremony will be followed by refreshments and a celebratory cake. “The Purple Heart Medal is only presented as a result of being wounded while engaged in combat with enemy forces,” said Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Shellito. “By observing Purple Heart Day, we can help raise awareness for what a Purple Heart represents and further honor the sacrifice of our Veterans right here in Minnesota.” |
