Lanesboro, Minnesota, is often referred to as the "Bed & Breakfast Capital of Minnesota" and “One of the 20 Best Cities in America to Visit.” But Residents at Minnesota Veterans Homes - Preston talk about Lanesboro as the home of the local American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), Post 40, a group who consistently volunteers their time and talent to ensure that Veterans are supported in many ways.
They typically stop by on a monthly basis, and sometimes even more often depending on the number of scheduled activities that might benefit from volunteer participation. The group has been showing up since shortly after the Home opened for admissions in January 2024. As of March 2026, they have donated nearly 300 volunteer hours!
According to Kathryn Wade, ALA group spokesperson, the team’s time is primarily focused on visiting one-to-one with Residents and listening to the many inspiring stories they tell. They also support social and recreational therapy events, such as bingo, card and board games, dominoes, Connect 4 and puzzles. In addition, they assist with decorating the Veterans Home for the holidays to ensure it is as warm, welcoming and festive as their respective family homes, sponsor an Adopt-A-Veteran program to ensure Residents receive a Christmas gift and help host monthly birthday celebrations.
Kathryn shares that their collective motivation for volunteering is a deep desire to improve the lives of those who fought for our country. “We are grateful for the opportunity to make a difference, regardless of whether or not we have personal connections to specific Residents.” She notes that the most valuable skills a volunteer can offer are active listening, the ability to stay engaged with others and a good sense of humor. “It is incredibly gratifying to see Residents smile, participate in conversations and simply enjoy our time together. There is great fulfillment in making a difference in their daily lives.”
All Auxiliary members have family members (siblings, parents and grandparents) who served in the military representing all branches of service; several of their spouses are members of the Lanesboro American Legion.
Gabby Kinneberg, Public Affairs and Volunteer Coordinator, Preston Veterans Home, says the Lanesboro ALA, Post 40, brings tremendous positivity and laughter whenever they are on campus. “Residents look forward to seeing them on our calendar as they have been a true light to the Veterans. They really take the time to get to know everyone.”
Volunteer groups receive training before coming on board, which includes “shadowing” the Recreational Therapy team. More volunteers will likely be added this summer; interested organizations can contact the Home for more information.
