4/15/2025 1:00:00 PM

Earth MonthIn April, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) is celebrating the Earth with events and activities agency-wide to help us be more mindful of how we protect our planet.

Tuesday, April 22 is officially Earth Day—a globally recognized day to support environmental protection. Throughout the month we are sharing information and having fun with our employees and Residents in our Homes. We’ve set up “challenges” in the Homes and among our teams where Residents and employees can reflect on how to work toward a more sustainable future. We’re encouraging employees to use reusable water bottles, choose sustainable commuting options and spend more time outdoors. We’re also hosting two virtual seminars that Residents and team member can join online.

Planting for Pollinators will dive into the science behind how different birds, bees and other pollinators can help bring diversity to our gardens. Master gardener volunteer Sharon Decker will be sharing her knowledge from the Minneapolis Veterans Home.

Dragonflies of the North Woods brings to life the ecology and identity of all kinds of dragonflies in our region. Author Kurt Mead is a naturalist at Tettegouche State Park and will speak at the Silver Bay Veterans Home.

Help us celebrate Earth Day every day by making our planet a greener and cleaner home!

Here are some everyday tips we all can take part in:

  • Choose reusables and avoid single-use plastic
  • Ride public transit, bike or carpool instead of driving alone
  • Improve your health and reduce your environmental impact by eating locally grown foods.
