Desk of the Commissioner – January

2025 priorities include expanding Cemeteries, ending homelessness

1/15/2025 8:00:00 AM

Commissioner LindsayAfter an historic year of growth and expansion in 2024, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) is beginning 2025 with a renewed commitment to ensure Minnesota Veterans and their families receive the services and support they have earned.

With a significant investment in new facilities the past few years, we will now focus on maintaining operations and programs. Acknowledging that that the state will need to adopt a restrained budget to get through the FY28/29 structural imbalance, some of our key priorities this year include:

  • On the homelessness front, we expect to achieve another milestone in ending Veteran homelessness in 2025. There is only one of 10 areas in the state that have yet to declare an effectively end to Veteran homelessness in their communities. When this final area achieves this goal, Minnesota will be able to declare the statewide end to Veteran homelessness, only the fourth state in the country to do so.
  • The Hastings Veterans Home is poised for a complete rebuild. Plans have been drawn up and once Federal VA funding is secured,
    we will break ground.
  • An ongoing effort is to continue hiring new employees who share our passion for caring for Veterans, especially at our Veterans Homes. An advertising campaign is underway to spread the word regarding these opportunities to serve those who have served. Please consider joining our team or encouraging others to do so. Job openings are posted at /mdva/about/work-for-mdva/featured-jobs.jspMinnesotaVeteran.org/Careers.
