National recognition has been awarded to several Minnesota Veterans Homes! During the last month, both Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report magazines have announced “America’s Best Nursing Homes” for 2025. And Minnesota Veterans Homes were on the list:
U.S. News evaluated almost 15,000 nursing homes across the country while completing their research. Their ratings were determined by nurse staffing, patient outcomes and whether steps known to be effective in avoiding harm and improving health were built into nursing home routines.
To be recognized as one of the 2025 U.S. News Best Nursing Homes, a home must have been “High Performing” in short-term rehabilitation, long-term care or both. 2,836 (19%) met those criteria out of the 14,832 nursing homes evaluated by U.S. News, of which 2,152 homes were High Performing in short-term rehabilitation, 1,327 homes were High Performing in long-term care and 643 were High Performing in both.
According to U.S. News, there are 343 nursing homes in Minnesota. Of these, 57 received an overall rating of 5 out of 5. For details of the U.S. News methodology, read the FAQ and the methodology report.
Eric Meittunen, Deputy Commissioner - Veterans Healthcare, said, “The Minnesota Veterans Homes take pride in maintaining excellence in all aspects of operations and Resident care. We consistently strive to not only meet but exceed quality standards.”
Jonathan Stone, Administrator, Minnesota Veterans Homes - Fergus Falls, said, “This recognition reflects our staff’s expertise and commitment to compassionate care. They make our Residents feel like extended family and work to create the best possible life experience at the Fergus Falls Veterans Home.”
Scott Buchanan, Minnesota Veterans Homes Healthcare Operations Project Manager and former Administrator, Minnesota Veterans Homes - Luverne, echoed that sentiment specific to his campus, saying: “Everyone on the team – some who have been here for 30 years or longer – makes the difference and is responsible for this exceptional accomplishment. I’m so proud of the staff’s strength and resilience and thank them for all they do.”
Doug Britain, Campus Administrator, noted that the Minnesota Veterans Homes - Minneapolis received “unique recognition: high performing ratings for both short-term and long-term stays. While we don’t provide short-term rehab at our facilities in the traditional nursing home sense, we understand that our rehab services fell into this category. Only 21 nursing homes in Minnesota received recognition for both short-term and long-term excellence, a great recognition for our facility.”
Congratulations to the Fergus Falls, Luverne and Minneapolis Veterans Homes for achieving this designation recognition!
