In case you missed it, Earth Day is celebrated each year near the end of April. From beekeeping to birding, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) staff and Residents celebrated the whole month of April as Earth Month learning, sharing and doing!
Here’s a just a snapshot of what we did:
Our Residents and staff found out! Microgreens are the shoots of salad vegetables such as arugula, Swiss chard, mustard or beetroot picked just after the first leaves have developed. Our Silver Bay team members streamed the lecture live so anyone across the agency could attend.
Residents and staff at our Minnesota Veterans Homes in Minneapolis and Silver Bay learned the science and art of beekeeping, how to develop pollinator-friendly gardens, the many environmental benefits and taste-tested local honey. The Silver Bay presentation streamed so other Veterans Homes and staff agency-wide could attend.
The MDVA’s Sustainability Team led a recycling workshop for Residents at the Minneapolis Domiciliary.
An avid bike commuter set up a table at the Minneapolis Veterans Home to explain the environmental and health benefits of bike commuting. He provided tips and tricks and even demonstrated how to change a flat tire. Did you know that Minneapolis is considered the most bikeable large city in the United States, according to a ranking by the advocacy group PeopleForBikes.
Residents at the new Bemidji Veterans Home made wildflower seed pods and distributed them and setup bird feeders.
