July has been an active although quiet month for the agency. Obviously, the Fourth of July enabled the Department to spend time with their family, enjoy the Minnesota weather, and also reflect on the day’s significance for our country. We must always be vigilant in remembering that freedom is not free!
Key events that have occurred recently started with a job’s fair for Veterans. The Department of Economic Development (DEED) held a most impressive event. I was struck by the number of employers at the event seeking Veterans. It was an interesting day in that it provided evidence that our economy is moving forward and that employers are definitely looking for good employees. It is extremely important that our Veterans have a good job.
The legislative session this past year included the expansion of the Minnesota G.I. bill. The changes now cover licensure and certifications. The bill recognizes the value of their military experience. The new “Helmets to Hardhats” initiative will help our Veterans get credit for military experiences that relate to the trades. The legislators approved our state approving agency so that we can work directly with employers to approve on-the-job training programs so that our Veterans can receive their G.I. bill benefits while they are in training with the new employer.
These are just some of the things that have been occurring at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. The Governor and Minnesota legislative leadership has been very supportive of Veterans and the recent income tax exclusion is one significant example of their support. I encourage all of you to thank you your legislators for their support of Veterans.
