From the Desk of the Commissioner - May

5/16/2016 10:59:27 AM

Commissioner Shellito 2015This current month of May has become an intriguing one. The activity here at MDVA has been somewhat quieter than usual.  Our approved Veterans Homes construction projects have been funded enabling us to care for our Veteran Residents. I’m very proud of the work that the Homes do and the service they provide our Veterans.  I am convinced that should we have more beds available, that we would quickly fill them with Veterans who want to be with fellow Veterans.  And, our Programs & Services Division remains as active as ever.

May is noted for Memorial Day, a day that has become known as the beginning of summer. While I recognize that Memorial Day is a national holiday, I ask all Minnesotans to honor its purpose and pause to reflect on the sacrifices of our Veterans.  I also encourage you to instill in your loved ones the importance of recognizing those who made the commitment and sacrifice to support our country.

If you are looking for an event to attend visit our Memorial Day Events webpage

Also, I encourage you to listen to the Tom Lyons’ Military Radio Hour, which will be live on Memorial Day from 6 - 9 a.m.  I had the pleasure of being with Tom at Camp Ripley, Minnesota where a number of outstate radio stations were hosted.  They were shown Camp Ripley and also the role that the Military Radio Hour plays in keeping our Veterans informed.  Thank you Tom for all that you do in caring for our fellow Veterans.

And if you are up for some travel, I encourage you to hop in your car and travel to Preston, Minnesota to tour our new Veterans Cemetery.  We are hosting a Dedication Ceremony on May 29 starting at 1:30 p.m. If you aren’t able to make that our cemetery is open to visitors seven days a week.  The Preston Veterans Cemetery has quickly become one of the ‘crown jewels’ within the VA system. The location, with its rolling hills, nearby river, and beautiful setting are a true tribute to our Veterans who choose it to be their final resting place.

Be advised, summer will be upon us very soon – and historically it goes by in a flash – so get out and enjoy it to the fullest. And, as always, be safe.

Commissioner
