Commissioner Shellito

Commissioner-Shellito-2015 The Minnesota Military Family Tribute (MMFT) is nearing completion on the State's Capitol Mall here in St. Paul. This project, which is a special tribute dedicated to the families of members of our military past and present, has been over three years from conception, fundraising, design, and construction. A brainchild of Bill and Teri Popp, this tribute recognizes all those behind the scenes - the spouses, children, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, and all others who, through emotional ties, were there with their loved one as they were away from home in service to their country.

Everyone is invited to attend the dedication event, which is free and open to the public. The event will be held on the Capitol lawn in front of the Veterans Service Building located between the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials. Mark on your calendar Saturday, June 13. The formal program will be held from 10 a.m. until noon, followed by free entertainment until 2 p.m. The first hour will be Rocky Lynne, a crowd favorite among Veterans and families alike. Following Rocky will be the Steele Family again providing entertainment for all attendees.

Plan on making it a day. Food trucks will be available or bring your own. The planners also recommend that you bring your lawn chairs and blankets as seating will be limited.

Historically parking is always been an issue around the capitol however the Centennial parking ramp located off of Martin Luther King Blvd. will be available. Here is a detailed map of parking that's available around the Capitol Complex.

For more details regarding the tribute and to see pictures of the building of the Memorial please visit the website at http://militaryfamilytribute.org.

The memorial, because of its unique character, will be a lasting tribute not only to those who served, but also to those who were left at home to wonder, worry, love and support their service member. I also want to specifically acknowledge the Gold Star families, for they paid the ultimate price through the loss of their loved one in the service to our country.

See you at the dedication!
