MilitaryChildImageIn April Minnesotans come together to honor and recognize the children of those who serve, past and present. Military-connected youth throughout the state will be recognized for the sacrifices they make while a parent serves in the Armed Forces.

I'm proud of our tradition here in Minnesota, as well as the concept behind this program which recognizes the sacrifices and service of our military children. Let's come together to honor these children this month. I guarantee it will impact them more than you ever realize, for years to come, said Larry Shellito, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

Governor Dayton has proclaimed April as Month of the Military Child in the State of Minnesota and as a special recognition military children and children of Veterans can be registered to receive a letter of thanks from the Governor.

Letters can be requested by visiting the Month of the Military page.

Parents can register to receive a letter from the Governor that recognizes military-connected youth as being our smallest heroes and offers a small token of appreciation, said Laura Groeneweg, lead youth programs coordinator for Deployment Cycle Support Family Programs.

Month of the Military Child was first celebrated in April 1986 under former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, said Groeneweg. This recognition reinforces military-connected youth that they play an integral role in supporting their service member. To register a child visit the Month of the Military Child page.

Communities can also do their part to recognize military-connected youth during Month of the Military Child by wearing purple on Purple Up Day, which will take place April 15 at 9 a.m. at the State Capitol Rotunda in St. Paul. Purple Up Day shows support for military-connected youth and raises awareness of their sacrifices. Military families and supporters are encouraged to attend this event.
