Police-OfficersDue to recent legislative action, military Veterans will now have increased eligibility to apply for Minnesota state police positions. Governor Dayton signed a new bill into law on May 16, which changed the Veteran requirements needed to apply to civilian police forces. The new law reduces the years of military law enforcement experience needed to qualify to take the police reciprocity exam. Now Veterans with four years of active duty experience in law enforcement or Veterans who hold a two-year college degree with a minimum of two years of military law enforcement experience may qualify to take the exam.

In the past, Veterans were required to have five years of active duty experience in military law enforcement before qualifying to take the police reciprocity exam, while Veterans who had a two-year college degree were required three years of service. The bill, Chapter 268, HF1915 has made these service requirements more consistent with typical military requirements, while also building on recent reforms that allow military police officers to take their reciprocity exam while still on active duty.

Governor Dayton believes that these changes will help Veterans transition back into civilian life while continuing service at home in their communities. The bill is part of a broader effort from the Dayton Administration to help Minnesota Veterans find meaningful work. "I thank these Veterans for their remarkable service, and pledge continued support to help all Minnesota Veterans find employment," stated Governor Dayton.

The new law was passed prior to the Minnesota State Patrol beginning their hiring process on June 30. The department will hire approximately 50 troopers and applications will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. June 30 until 4:00 p.m. July 31, 2014 at www.dps.mn.gov.

The State Patrol has served and protected Minnesota roadways and motorists since 1929. The department began with only nine men, and has since expanded to nearly 600 troopers. Working alongside the public, the State Patrol is involved in a variety of roles including education, enforcement and crisis response. Troopers investigate crashes, conduct search-and-rescue missions, and assist other law enforcement agencies. The State Patrol may be a good fit for Veterans seeking to continue their service in law enforcement outside of the military providing them the opportunity to build on and utilize the knowledge and leadership they gained during their time in service.
