Today the Minneapolis Veterans Home celebrated the grand opening and ribbon cutting for Building 21. This ceremony marked the completion of the second phase of a three phased construction project at the Minneapolis Home, all designed to help best meet the changing needs of Veterans in Minnesota. Federal and state leaders, Residents, staff, community members, and Veterans Service Organizations came together to celebrate this milestone and reflect on the great work that has been done in serving our Veterans.
"With the completion of Building 21 and the upgrades made to the Minneapolis Veterans Home, the Veterans and Residents will live in a community they can call home that provides the highest quality of life and care that can be offered anywhere in the country," said Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Shellito.
This project wouldn't have been possible or come to fruition without the various longstanding partnerships MDVA has with Adolfson and Peterson Construction, the State Legislature, the Minnesota Department of Administration, Minnesota Management and Budget and various federal partners. Federal and state lawmakers in attendance at the event included U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, Congressman Collin Peterson, State Representative Jim Davnie and State Representative Bob Dettmer.
With four levels, Building 21 encompasses just over 155,000 square feet, offering Residents a home like environment. The main three floors house a 100 bed skilled nursing facility that provides private rooms and private bathrooms. The community-based design aligns with the Minnesota Veterans Home's commitment to Resident centered care by providing cozy, neighborhood style dining and gathering spaces - all in a home-like environment. The new building also provides common spaces for connecting, visiting and various activities.
"This is a facility our Veterans greatly deserve. We (the Department of Administration) are grateful to have been a part, helping to lead this project for our heroes to completion," said Minnesota Department of Administration Commissioner Matt Massman.
Residents and staff are looking forward to move-in day, which is scheduled for March 21.
