For Veterans in Hubbard County looking for a way to get to their medical appointments, they need look no further. The Hubbard County Veterans Services Office and the Heartland Express transit program have teamed up to create a Veterans Transportation Service. This service allows Veterans without transportation to get to and from their VA medical appointments. This service is free and available to all Hubbard County Veterans unless they qualify for travel reimbursement from the VA. In that case the county requires Veterans to turn that funding into their driver or the county. The transportation will take the Veterans to any medical appointments within the area, including dental appointments.

Veterans are transported to their appointments by either the Heartland Express bus or by certified volunteer drivers. These drivers use their own cars and time to transport Veterans, only to be reimbursed for mileage and meals. The Heartland bus is wheelchair accessible, so the county asks that if a Veteran needs transportation with wheelchair access that they use the bus. Assistance from family or friends to an appointment is welcomed based on available space.

The Heartland Express program cannot transport anyone will life-threatening injuries or medical emergencies.

Veterans interested in this program can contact the Heartland Express office at (218) 732-9328 or 1-800-660-1666 between 8 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday. Please be prepared to provide your full name, address, telephone number, and the date, time, and location of your scheduled appointment.

Funding for this service comes from the VA Medical Center, Hubbard County, private donations and a small grant from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

For any questions or concerns, please contact the Hubbard County Veterans Service Office.
