Health Unit Coordinators (HUCs) are essential members of our Minnesota Veteran Homes. HUCs facilitate connections between Residents and staff members and perform an endless amount of tasks including scheduling and administrative duties, patient check-ins, office supply orders, and patient coordination, which keep operations running and Residents cared for.
For almost 40 years, Health Unit Coordinators and their service to the community has been honored on August 23, Health Unit Coordinator Day. In 1980, Myrna LaFleur-Brooks met with several others to create the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators. In 2017, the entire week of August 23 was designated to nationally recognize HUCs.
HUCs have a long history of providing essential care and skill to the health care industry. Originally called “floor clerks,” HUCs first appeared during WWII when doctors and nurses were unable to handle administrative responsibilities with the influx of patients and soldiers. They quickly developed a permanent place in hospitals soon after.
Now many years later, HUCs continue to impact their communities with their irreplaceable role. According to Data USA, there are currently over 4.11 million HUCs in the workforce. Minnesota continues to be a leader in HUC education with Olmstead and Hennepin Counties awarding the second and third highest amount of degrees in the Nation.
HUCs are employed at four Minnesota Veteran Homes, where they are greatly appreciated. The care and attention HUCs give to our Veterans is second to none and makes all the difference. The impact they have is noticed and valued by staff, Residents and the community.
Thank you to all of our amazing Health Unit Coordinators! Our Veterans Homes couldn’t serve those who have served without you!
