Key Point: The Gambling Control Board currently interprets Minnesota statute to allow an organization to participate in only one "category" of charitable gambling in any calendar year.
The categories are:
So, if you've already conducted an "exempt" event during the calendar year, you would NOT be allowed to conduct an excluded raffle, excluded bingo, or be issued an organization license during that same calendar year. You would only be eligible to apply for an exempt permit.
If you've already conducted an excluded raffle (for example, a Start Simple raffle) or excluded bingo, you would NOT be allowed to get an exempt permit OR an organization license in that same calendar year. You would only be eligble to conduct additional excluded raffles or excluded bingo, provided that the calendar year prize limits and number of occasions remain with in the required limits.
Carefully plan your fundraising activities to avoid unintentionally limiting your options. And remember that the restriction applies to the entire calendar year, not just a portion of it.
