Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs)

Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) are available to check out just before a meeting and must be returned immediately afterward.

  • Senate: Please contact the Sergeant-at-Arms at 651-296-1119 for information regarding where to pick up and return ALDs for Senate events.
  • House: Please contact the House Public Information Services Office for information regarding where to pick up and return ALDs for House events.

In addition, hearing loops have been installed under the carpet in hearing rooms in the reconstructed Capitol Building (G3, G15, G19, G23, 120, and 123) and the Minnesota Senate Building ((1100, 1150, and 1200), Governor’s reception, and Attorney General’s conference room.  The audio system in the room must be turned on for the hearing loop to be activated. Loops are not installed in the State Office Building, where most House hearings happen.

Sign language interpreters

Meetings with a legislator Please contact the legislator's office at least 24 hours before you want to meet with the legislator. Tell the Legislative Assistant that you want to schedule a meeting with the legislator and that you need a sign language interpreter for the meeting. Include specific information about your interpreting preferences: ASL, Signed English, tactile, etc.

House or Senate floor sessions; committee meetings: Keystone Interpreting Solutions (K!S) is the contracted vendor for the Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC), who is responsible for covering the cost of interpreting services utilized by members to attend the aforementioned events. Those who are requesting ASL interpreting services will need to contact K!S to submit your request. You can reach K!S via phone (651) 454-7275 or email info@kisasl.com

For faster processing of requests, K!S offers an easy-to-use online scheduling database for managing services. You'll be able to see profiles of the interpreters assigned to you, along with other helpful information. If this is your first time contacting us, please fill out the New Customer Request form so that we can get you set up with a Requestor Profile.

K!S cannot guarantee they will be able to find an interpreter for you. To increase the chance that KIS will be able to find an interpreter, please contact KIS at least 24 hours before you plan to go to the floor session or committee meeting.

Sign language interpreter requests outside of the Twin Cities: For meetings with legislators or for hearings outside the Twin Cities, contact the Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC) at lcc@lcc.leg.mn or 651-296-1121, OR call K!S at 651-454-7275. Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) may be available for outstate requests.

Communications Access Real-time Translation (CART)

Meetings with a legislator: Please contact the legislator's office at least 24 hours before you want to meet with the legislator. Tell the Legislative Assistant that you want to schedule a meeting with the legislator and that you need CART for the meeting.

House or Senate floor sessions; committee meetings: Contact the Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC) at lcc@lcc.leg.mn or call (651) 296-1121.

LCC cannot guarantee CART services. To increase the chance that the LCC will be able to schedule CART, please contact the LCC at least 24 hours before you plan to go to the floor session or committee meeting.

  • Time of the committee meeting/floor session

CART requests outside of the Twin Cities: Because CART can be done remotely, CART can be requested if you are unable to travel to the Capitol to meet with legislators or attend hearings, and also if you want to meet with legislators or attend hearings outside the Twin Cities. Contact the Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC) at lcc@lcc.leg.mn or 651-296-1121.

Amplified phone, TTY, videophone

If you need to contact the Legislature, please feel free to call either through Minnesota Relay Service (call 7-1-1) or use your videophone. All numbers at the Legislature are connected to a voice phone.

Closed captioning for legislative broadcasts

All House and Senate floor sessions are televised with closed captions. During the legislative session, broadcasting is available on weekdays from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M. In some cases, committee hearings, press conferences and similar may be broadcasted. Broadcasting hours may be extended for high profile issues.

In addition, all House and Senate programming is available live on the Internet. Closed captioning is also provided. The programming can be found on the House and Senate websites.
