Communication Strategies

The ability to communicate with other human beings is a cherished part of life. There are many communication strategies available for persons who are losing their hearing and for the people who interact with them. These strategies include: 
  • Maintaining eye contact
  • Interacting in a well-lit and quiet environment
  • Speaking clearly at a normal pace (no shouting, please) and
  • One person talks at a time
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division of Minnesota (DHHS) offers handy tips on how to make minor adjustments to aid communication.

Those who are losing their hearing and those around them may experience challenges in coping with this change of life. If you are experiencing stress or hardship, here are a few tips for you to consider. A few examples include:

  • Letting people know what you need from them
  • Finding local support groups like Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA)
