Cued English-Read ACT Adding to Your Toolbox: Using Cued American English to Address the Read Act, Literacy and Language Acquisition

Workshop description

We will begin our presentation with an overview of the system of Cued Speech including a demonstration of the handshapes, placements, and resources for learning it. We will reference the program in which we work (ISD 917 DHH Elementary Resource Program) and how each of us uses Cued American English on a daily basis with our learners for speech/language therapy sessions and resource room instruction. We will then provide examples of how Cued American English provides clear, complete visual access to spoken English to address Science of Reading approaches to literacy instruction, and the place in which language, articulation, and reading intersect. These examples will reference LETRS training, Scarborough's Reading Rope, examples from phonemic awareness curriculum such as UFLI and developmental norms for both articulation and spoken English grammar typically used with hearing children.

About the presenters

Sarah Ideen

Sarah Ideen is the Lead Teacher for ISD 917's DHH Elementary Resource Program. She has worked as a teacher in the resource program for ten years and previously worked as an itinerant Teacher of DHH for two years; prior to that she was a nationally certified Cued Language Transliterator.

Heather Stoesz

Heather Stoesz is a speech/language pathologist for ISD 917. She has worked with a variety of student populations preK - 12th grade over the years, but has specialized in working with resource students who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deafblind for most of her 28 years at ISD 917. She is fluent in American Sign Language and Cued American English. She has given numerous presentations at the local and state level and has had the honor of presenting at one ASHA convention. Topics have included phonological/phonemic awareness, the effectiveness of Cued American English for speech/language pathology, evaluating the speech and language skills of D/HH Learners and teaching in a bilingual-bicultural model. Recently, she contributed an article to be published in NCSA's upcoming book "Our Chosen Path."
