Pharmacist Prescribing Protocols
In 2020, the Minnesota Legislature passed a law that allows pharmacists to independently prescribe three categories of drugs: self-administered hormonal contraceptives, opioid antagonists, and nicotine replacement products. In order to prescribe these drugs, pharmacists must follow protocols developed by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy. The protocols were developed in consultation with the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Boards of Medical Practice and Nursing, and professional associations representing advanced practice registered nurses, pharmacists, physicians, and physician assistants. Pharmacist PEP/PREP Protocols and Documents
A Minnesota licensed pharmacist is authorized to prescribe and administer drugs to prevent the acquisition of HIV in accordance with Minnesota Statutes 151.37 Subd 17 and other applicable portions of statutes and rules.
