Commerce is running this grant as two separate applications. The Equipment Round funds the purchase of buses and chargers, while the Planning & Technical Assistance Round can help you decide on the next steps for your electric school bus journeys, including applying for federal funding opportunities. You can apply to one, or to both.

The program closes to new applications on December 31, 2026.

The Equipment Round and the Planning & Technical Assistance Round are separate applications. Applying to one does not affect the other, and they are scored separately.

Choose Equipment if:

  • You already know you want electric buses
  • You have talked with your utility about power at your bus yard
  • You can cover the cost that the grant does not cover, or you have federal funding lined up
  • You are ready to buy buses

Apply for an Equipment grant!

Choose Planning & Technical Assistance if:

  • You are interested but you don’t know where to start
  • You don’t know whether your routes or your yard can handle electric buses
  • You need help talking with your utility
  • You want help writing a federal grant application

Apply for a Planning & Technical Assistance grant!

Choose both if:

You want buses now and you want a plan for the rest of your fleet
