Are thermal energy storage or electric vehicle batteries eligible for the incentive?

No, thermal energy storage and electric vehicle batteries are not eligible for the rebate.

Are there Federal tax credits for energy storage systems?

There is a Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit that includes battery storage technology. Everybody’s tax situation is unique, and you should consult with your tax professional and/or accountant for any specific tax related information.

Is there an income requirement to be eligible for a storage incentive?

No, there is not an income eligibility component for the standard incentive levels. Review the specific program eligibility for the Xcel Energy and outside Xcel Energy territory programs for low-income incentive/pilot program eligibility.

Are entities like businesses, non-profits, governments, multifamily housing, or schools eligible?

Yes, any property owner that meets the eligibility requirements can apply for an incentive.

Is the rebate taxable?

The rebate may be taxable. Everybody’s tax situation is unique, and individuals should consult with their tax professional and/or accountant for any specific tax related information.

Is the energy storage incentive a tax credit or will direct payments be made?

Energy storage incentives are not a tax credit. Incentives will be issued in the form of a direct payment.

Can one person or entity receive more than one incentive if it is for different properties?

Yes, the incentive is available on a one per address basis.

If I have questions about the eligibility of my system, how should I proceed? 

Please reach out to storageincentive.comm@state.mn.us detailing the specifics of your system and we can determine if it is eligible. 

Does a Community Solar Subscription count towards the on-site solar requirement?

No, Community Solar does not count towards the on-site solar requirement.

Where in the process of installation should the applicant be at?

Applicants need to have at a minimum an active interconnection application for their energy storage system. 

Is the Utility MOU required in the first portion of the application?

The utility MOU is currently not required for the first portion of the application. The MOU may be required later on in the process. As a substitute for the MOU in the first potion of the application, the utility may submit a letter outlining that utility battery programs, and general interconnection information has been communicated.
