Similar to last month and other recent leisure traveler surveys, in a Sept. Longwoods International national survey, 91% of travelers reported having travel plans in the next six months. Despite the strong appetite, economic concerns continue to impact travel plans. Specifically, 28% said that concerns about their personal financial situation would greatly impact their travel decisions, 23% said that transportation costs would greatly impact their travel decisions and 28% said that inflation would greatly impact travel decisions.
This survey wave posed questions about how a destination's political reputation (e.g. traditionally blue/Democratic or red/Republican) influences the decision to travel there. Responses were mixed with 45% reporting that political reputation does not influence decisions and another 25% saying that it influences their travel decisions but is not the main deciding factor. Only 11% avoid traveling to destinations with a certain political reputation. Generally, those who identify as Democrat are more likely to consider or be impacted by a destination's political reputation.
This survey round also included questions about air travel and fall travel. The top three factors that will reduce the likelihood of traveling by air are higher fuel costs raising the cost of flying (39%), risk of flight delays/cancellations (25%) and crowded airports and planes (23%). This fall, the top activities national travelers plan to participate in are visiting friends and family (65%), taking a road trip (46%) and visiting a national or state park or monument (32%).
