At College or Anywhere Else: It’s Easy to Get Care Away from Home

8/22/2024 6:53:29 PM

Whether your kids are heading off to college or you get sick while squeezing in a final road trip before Labor Day, it’s easy to get care away from home.

Just go to a health care provider within your HealthPartners or Blue Cross national network. Call the number on the back of your ID card to find current providers where you are.
Notify SEGIP in writing if your dependent now has an address out of state. Send the updated address to segip.mmb@state.mn.us.

The out-of-area care schedule of benefits outlines how the care is covered. You’ll see it’s similar to what you’d pay at a cost level 3 primary care clinic in Minnesota. The care you get is considered out of the area if the clinic isn't located in Minnesota or in the Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota, or South Dakota counties that border Minnesota.

You will pay the entire bill if you seek general care from a provider who is not in-network. There is no out-of-network coverage, except for emergencies and urgent care. There are separate deductibles for care you get in Minnesota or in counties that border the state, and for care you get away from the area.

Until this year, only some people could get routine care paid for outside the Minnesota Advantage Health Plan’s service area. The benefit was only for employees who lived outside Minnesota and nearby communities or were away for college. Those employees needed to submit forms and get approved ahead of time. Now there’s no paperwork or pre-approval required.
