Are you at risk for Prediabetes?

11/14/2016 9:31:30 AM

As part of efforts to lead the fight against diabetes in Minnesota, SEGIP is partnering with Omada Health to bring awareness to common risk factors. Check them out below, then take a 1-minute health screener to find out your own risk at omadahealth.com/segip.

  1. Overweight
Nearly 2 out of 3 Minnesotans were overweight in 2014. The more fatty tissue you have on your body, the more resistant your cells become to insulin.
  2. Belly fat
If you carry extra fat in your midsection, you have higher chances than a person who carries it in their hips, thighs, butt, or anywhere else.
  3. Sedentary lifestyle
The less physically active you are, the greater your risk. Experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week.
  4. Family history
Your risk increases if a parent or sibling has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
  5. Race
If you are African-American, Latino, American-Indian, Asian-American, or of Pacific-Islander descent, you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
  6. Age
Diabetes risks increase with age—especially over the age of 45.
  7. Blood pressure
If your blood pressure is regularly above 140/90, your risk is increased.
  8. Cholesterol levels
An HDL reading below 35mg/dL or having triglyceride levels above 250 mg/dL makes you more prone to diabetes.
  9. Sleep
Untreated sleep problems, especially sleep apnea, can increase the risk of insulin resistance and and prediabetes.
