Minnesota Thrives When Workplaces are Inclusive for Pregnant Employees

2/12/2024 10:51:41 AM

Pregnancy Discrimination Graphic

In the past couple of months, we announced two pregnancy discrimination settlement agreements. In both, employers fired employees for being pregnant, which violates the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

Pet Ranch fired an employee within one hour of learning that she was pregnant and PL Dental fired an employee after she notified them of her pregnancy.

Why They’re Important: These cases demonstrate the importance of creating inclusive and welcoming workplace cultures by having strong anti-discrimination policies, enforcing those policies, and training on those policies.

About Pregnancy Discrimination

Pregnancy discrimination can include an employer denying a temporary reasonable accommodation to a pregnant employee or an employer firing or denying a promotion to an employee based on the employee’s pregnancy.

A potential or current employee is not required to tell an employer that they are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Additionally, an employer cannot ask a potential or current employee if they are pregnant or plan to have children.
