Celebrating 10 Years of Advancing Women’s Economic Wellbeing

WESA 10 Year Anniversary

It takes all of us to create a state where women can thrive. That’s why we invite you join us in celebrating the Women’s Economic Security Act on May 13!

What is the Women’s Economic Security Act?

10 years ago, Minnesota passed the Women’s Economic Security Act (WESA). This law works to strengthen workplace protections for women, advance equal pay, train women for higher-wage jobs, support women entrepreneurs, among other priorities.

Legislators recognized the importance of state investments being used to intentionally undo disparities and inequities. That’s why as part of WESA they mandated the Minnesota Department of Human Rights to issue Equal Pay Certificates, which require employers to pay men and women equal wages for equal work.

Why it Matters

When WESA was signed into law, data showed that Minnesota women were becoming the main source of income for many households. However, many women were struggling to make ends meet due to the gender pay gap of 20-43%, caregiving responsibilities, and inflexible workplaces.

The data also showed rental housing in Minnesota was unaffordable, child care costs were high, and elderly women were more likely to live in poverty than men. These disparities are higher for women of color.

Celebrate WESA

Attend the WESA 10-year anniversary event! Learn about the history and impact of WESA, improvements to the law, the current economic status of women in Minnesota, unfinished business and more.

The event is on May 13th, from 8:00 am – 12:00pm at the Minnesota Senate Building, Room 1200, at 95 University Ave. W. in St. Paul. You can also attend this event virtually. For more details and registration, visit the WESA event page.
