Housing Discrimination
Housing discrimination has no home in Minnesota.
Under the Minnesota Human Rights Act, landlords are prohibited from discriminating against you because of: your race, disability, sex, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other identities under the law.
If you believe you experienced discrimination, complete this form 💻.
Examples
- Disability discrimination: A landlord denied a tenant with a disability from living with their service animal by demanding a pet deposit, pet rent, and other pet fees. Service animals are not pets.
- Race discrimination: A real estate agent discriminated against a Black home buyer by refusing to show or sell houses in predominantly white neighborhoods because of their race.
- Religious discrimination: A bank denied a Muslim family low interest rates for a home loan compared to other applicants who practice different religions with the same credit status.
- Retaliation: A property manager sexually harassed a tenant. The tenant repeatedly reported the property manager to the landlord, who supervises the property manager. The landlord refused to conduct an investigation or take any action to address the harassment. Instead, the landlord retaliated against the tenant by charging higher rent and saying that they’d “be more comfortable living somewhere else.”
- Sexual orientation discrimination: A landlord of a duplex refused to allow a gay couple from renting the home because of their sexual orientation.
