The mission of the Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators is to promote the public's interest in quality care and effective services for residents of nursing facilities by ensuring that licensed administrators are qualified to perform their administrative duties.

Opportunity Alert:  HEALTH SERVICE EXECUTIVE Grandparent clause is active!

The Minnesota Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators acknowledges the recently released National Association of Boards for Long Term Care Administrator’s (NAB) grandparent clause policy for the Health Service Executive (HSE).

  • The Health Service Executive is the NAB approach for national portability of license and validates the core competencies for entry level administrators working in all three lines of service; skilled, assisted living and home and community based services.  It also reshapes future academic programs to broaden their curriculum.
  • BENHA initiated a work group to draft language for the 2018 legislative session.  At this point, working with multiple stakeholders there is no known opposition.  However, BENHA acknowledges the HSE has not been enacted at this time for Minnesota but believes you should be informed.
  • The grandparent clause is now available through NAB.  If interested in the grandparent approach, ACT now, as the clause expires on January 31, 2018.  Interested Minnesota LNHA’s, holding a current license with experience across all three lines of service may be NAB verified as meeting their minimum qualifications.  NAB Verify will then send validation to those states that accept the HSE as meeting their entry level standard.
  • The website, provides all the information for the grandparent clause.  It also provides direction for other candidates not meeting the grandparent criteria but the pathway towards an HSE credential. NAB is the single source for official direction.     Please contact NAB with questions.

Criminal Background Checks - Effective September 1, 2017

The Minnesota Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators is statutorily required to complete a Federal and State Criminal Background Check prior to issuing your license. In Minnesota, a formal application to the Board will initiate this separate processing conducted by another agency.   Initial results indicate this may add three to four weeks to complete the CBC and application to license process.  Once you apply online or the paper application is received, the Criminal Background Check Unit will contact you with directions to complete the CBC.  The $32.00 fee is added to your initial application and there is no additional fee.  The Minnesota Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators will be informed of the results and move your application forward.

LNHA Job Posting Service

A LNHA requested that BENHA provide a job posting service which is now live on the website with a limited group of postings. The Board supports the existing association model of job postings and added this feature as another resource to connect the LNHA to communities requiring a LNHA as their administrator of record.  Since it is a trial period, the board appreciates any feedback to improve this new service.
