The Minnesota Board of Executives for Long-Term Services and Supports will be holding Special Session Board Meeting on September 9th , 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Webex and at 335 Randolph Ave. St. Paul, Minnesota 55102. The purpose of this meeting it to review proposed changes to MN Administrative Rule (s) 6400.5000 – 6400.8000.
Requirements for Assisted Living Director Licensure
The board shall issue an individual a license to practice as an assisted living director in Minnesota upon determining that the individual:
filed a completed application with BELTSS in the online portal for licensure before or within six months of hire.
has successfully completed a criminal background check (CBC)
meets one of the following education and work experience requirements:
a high school diploma or equivalent plustwo years of work experience in the continuum of long-term services and supports, includingone year in a management or supervisory position.
an associate degreeplusone year of work experience in the continuum of long-term services and supports, including six months in a management or supervisory position; or
a bachelor's degree or higher plussix months of work experience in a management or supervisory experience in the continuum of long-term services and supports; AND
completed an approved ALD program course
completed a field experience/practicum
passed the national examinations
passed the state examination
Note: It is strongly encouraged to complete the program course and the majority of field experience prior to taking the national and state examinations.
