ALD Licensure Requirements

Requirements for Assisted Living Director Licensure

The board shall issue an individual a license to practice as an assisted living director in Minnesota upon determining that the individual:
  • filed a completed application with BELTSS in the online portal for licensure before or within six months of hire.
  • has successfully completed a criminal background check (CBC)
  • meets one of the following education and work experience requirements:
    • a high school diploma or equivalent plus two years of work experience in the continuum of long-term services and supports, including one year in a management or supervisory position.
    • an associate degree plus one year of work experience in the continuum of long-term services and supports, including six months in a management or supervisory position; or
    • a bachelor's degree or higher plus six months of work experience in a management or supervisory experience in the continuum of long-term services and supports; AND
  • completed an approved ALD program course
  • completed a field experience/practicum 
  • passed the national examinations 
  • passed the state examination 
 
Note:  It is strongly encouraged to complete the program course and the majority of field experience prior to taking the national and state examinations.
