What are Assisted Living Directors and Facilities?

An Assisted Living Director is the person who administers, manages, supervises, or is in general administrative charge of a Minnesota licensed assisted living facility.

Assisted Living facilities are required to obtain a facility (building) license through the Minnesota Department of Health.  There must be one designated LALD as the Director of Record with BELTSS for each Minnesota Assisted Living facility. This person does not need to be an owner of the facility. Each assisted living will be issued a health facility identification number (HFID).

Only an individual who is qualified as a licensed assisted living director and who holds a valid license for the current licensure period may use the title "Licensed Assisted Living Director" and the abbreviation "LALD" after the individual's name. The LALD is considered the Director of Record (DOR) of the building operations and is the responsible authority for residents, families, consumers, and regulators.  The Director of Record is updated in the licensee online portal or by notifying the board within 5 working days when a change of employment occurs.

*When a Licensed Assisted Living Director (LALD) is not available, an Owner may hire a non-LALD who seeks a Residency Permit which is valid for 12 months.  An application for an Assisted Living Director In Residence (ALDIR) is required for the individual who is designated in this role.  A residency permit must be obtained within 30 days of the previous Director of Record leaving the facility as the LALD.  Residency permits are not transferable and may not be extended beyond the 12 months issued.  For more information on ALDIR or Residency Permits, review the application for ALDIR.
