Tonight, tune in to watch On the Margins, two 30-minute programs on predatory lending, produced by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights and CTV15 at 6 p.m. in ten Twin Cities suburban communities.
On the Margins: People and Communities Locked Out of the American Dream was produced as part of Financial Literacy Month in Minnesota and includes two separate half-hour episodes.
The first program examines predatory home lending, payday loans, credit discrimination and other practices that unfairly take advantage of people who are financially struggling. These issues are explored by a panel of experts, which includes:
- Mike Rothman, Minnesota Commerce Commissioner
- Kevin Lindsey, Minnesota Human Rights Commissioner
- Mary Tingerthal, Minnesota Housing Commissioner,
- Ron Elwood, Supervising Attorney for Legal Services Advocacy Project of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid.
The second program looks at the challenges facing individuals who are struggling with these and other practical financial issues associated with home ownership, financing an education, planning for retirement and dealing with debt. A panel of experts discusses practical information about what to do, and what not to do when facing these issues.
In addition to Commissioners Lindsey and Rothman, two non-profit community leaders joined the panel in the second program:
- Ruby Lee, President of CLUES, Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio.
- Maritza Mariani, Associate Director of the Neighborhood Development Alliance (NeDA)
Both panel discussions are moderated by well-known Twin Cities broadcast journalist Vineeta Sawkar.
