MDHR launches Minnesota Conversations Chatcast

2/24/2015 10:14:43 AM

First Chatcast features Dr. Josie Johnson reflecting on 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, the 'Selma to Montgomery' March

ST. PAUL, MN - The Minnesota Department of Human Rights is announcing the launch of the Minnesota Conversations Chatcast with its first episode featuring local civil rights legend Dr. Josie Johnson reflecting on the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act and the Selma to Montgomery march for voting rights in March 1965.

We are enthusiastic to add chatcasts to the Department's content management strategy, Commissioner Kevin Lindsey said. It offers the opportunity to discuss important issues relevant to people's lives in a relaxed setting with the convenience of listening on your own terms.

MDHR's Minnesota Conversations Chatcasts is one element of the Department's goal to provide employees, employers, advocates, people interested in civil and human rights, and the public with compelling, relevant and viewable content to inform their lives. Portions of the chatcasts will be shown on MDHR's television program, Minnesota Conversations, which is featured on Roseville's CTV and the St. Paul Neighborhood Network in St. Paul. MDHR's Minnesota Conversations Chatcasts are available on YouTube and iTunes as a podcast.

MDHR began featuring content on the history of the Selma to Montgomery march and the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act through a social media campaign on Feb. 18. This included a tribute blog written by Commissioner Kevin Lindsey on Jimmie Lee Jackson, whose death is considered by many to have been the catalyst for the famed march from Selma to Montgomery, which ultimately led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

The demand for audio and video content that audiences can view on-demand is increasing, Communications Director Christine Dufour said. MDHR's aim is to provide relevant content to users on their own terms whether you prefer your local cable television station, a computer or your hand-held device.

Throughout March, Minnesota Conversations television program will feature four chatcasts focusing on the history of voting rights, the Selma to Montgomery march and the struggle that led to the signing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The program will also include chatcasts on recent changes to Minnesota's voting laws, policies that disenfranchise many Americans, and how to make voting better while ensuring that all eligible voters can participate in the electoral process.

On March 4, the Minnesota Conversations television program will begin airing in ten North Suburban communities on CTV-15. The programs can also be seen on MDHR's YouTube channel.
