11/29/2012 10:14:43 AM

Registration Still Open for Minnesota Department of Human Rights All-Day Event

The Department of Human Rights kicks off Human Rights Week in Minnesota with an all-day symposium providing must-have information on key issues for everyone concerned with human rights. Covering the latest trends and legal developments in employment, criminal justice and public policy, the Human Rights Symposium will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3 at the University of Minnesota's Continuing Education and Conference Center in St. Paul.

Education is a vital component to fulfilling our mission to end discrimination in Minnesota, said Kevin Lindsey, Commissioner of the Department of Human Rights. We are pleased to be able to assemble some of the most knowledgeable experts on topics ranging from sexual harassment to criminal background checks.

We encourage attorneys, employers, educators, and everyone concerned with human rights and social justice to take this opportunity to get most up-to-date information on these critical human rights issues, Lindsey said.

The symposium offers three separate tracks of workshops on employment, criminal justice and public policy issues, including:

  • Sexual harassment
  • Reprisal
  • Employers' use of criminal background checks
  • Barriers to people with disabilities in the courtroom
  • School bullying
  • Voting rights
  • Social media and hiring
  • Reducing disparities in employment and contracting
  • The Department of Homeland Security's Secure Communities program
  • Commissioner Lindsey's Top 10 Dos and Don'ts for charging parties and respondents.

Commissioner Lindsey will also deliver a plenary address discussing changes within the Department of Human Rights concerning discrimination investigations, contract compliance, public policy initiatives, and recent Minnesota Court opinions interpreting the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

The symposium is one of the most affordable all-day events the department has ever offered, with a registration cost of $70 per individual. Attendance is limited and registration is on a first-come, first served basis. Individuals may register through the department's web site, or by calling the department at 651.539.1126 (TTY 651.296.1283) or 1.800.657.3704.

Attendees will receive 4.25 continuing legal education (CLE) credit (MN) from the Minnesota Board of Continuing Legal Education (MBCLE) for attending the entire day.
