Two Way to Get Involved in the Consent Decree

11/12/2024 3:41:34 PM

Community members have an important role to play in making sure the City of Minneapolis (City) and Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) are making transformational changes required by the consent decree.

Below are two ways you can get involved!

1. Monitoring Team's First Community Meetings

This week, Effective Law Enforcement for All (ELEFA) will host its first public community meetings. You'll get a chance to meet the team, hear about their work, and learn how the monitoring team evaluates MPD's policies.

The two meetings will follow the same agenda and format.

Why the meetings are important

These regular meetings are hosted by Effective Law Enforcement for All-- not the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, the City, or MPD -- and are required by the consent decree.

At these meetings, Effective Law Enforcement for All will provide updates about the City and MPD’s work to center continuous learning based on humanity and civil rights as detailed in the consent decree.

Effective Law Enforcement for All's first meeting (Tomorrow!)

  • When: Wednesday, November 13 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
    • Food is served 5:30 - 6:00
  • Where: Sabathnai Community Center 310 E 38th St Suite 120, Minneapolis, MN 55409

Effective Law Enforcement for All's second meeting

  • When: Thursday, November 14 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
    • Food is served 5:30 - 6:00

2. Share your feedback on MPD's Policies

As part of the consent decree, the City and MPD are required to collect feedback from community members while developing and updating its policies.

Feedback process

Generally, here's the process for updating policies:

  • Community members have an opportunity to provide feedback
  • MPD takes feedback into account and makes changes
  • The Minnesota Department of Human Rights and Effective Law Enforcement for All review to provide additional feedback and final approval as required by the consent decree

Share your feedback with the City and MPD on these policies

The deadline to share your feedback with the City and MPD is December 13.
