Latine Heritage Month is September 15 - October 15, celebrating the rich Latine/Latino/Latina/Latinx, and Hispanic communities and their histories, traditions, heritages, and joy.
There are multiple names for this month such as Hispanic Heritage Month and Latino Heritage Month. This highlights how identity, or how we understand and express ourselves, is very complex. Latine identities are diverse, unique, and are shaped by geography, heritage, race, gender, and more.
Latine people’s heritages are rooted in many countries, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Cuba, Columbia, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and more. The dates of Latine Heritage Month are linked to the independence of several of these Latin American nations.
The theme “We are all, we are one” recognizes Latine Minnesotans’ impact on building community bonds and advancing civil rights across the state.
Building a thriving Minnesota means intentionally creating and enforcing anti-racist and equitable policies and practices.
That’s why the Minnesota Department of Human Rights celebrates that the Pay History Ban will go into effect on January 1, 2024. Currently, Latina women earn 55 cents and Latino men earn 65 cents for every dollar a white man earns. The Pay History Ban will help close the racial and gender pay gap by ending the pay history question in Minnesota.
Along with policy changes, our Department works to address violations of the Minnesota Human Rights Act like when we reached a settlement agreement with Paramount Auto Service after the company did not take meaningful action when a Latino employee experienced race discrimination and sexual assault from a manager.
