The American with Disabilities Act Turns 33!

7/26/2023 9:07:39 AM

ADA 33rd Anniversary

On this day 33 years ago, the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law.

Similar to the Minnesota Human Rights Act, the ADA prohibits disability discrimination in several areas, including employment and government services.

At the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, we celebrate when spaces are accessible– whether that’s online or in-person at work, school, or an apartment building.

While we celebrate, we also recognize that systemic ableism is pervasive. For cases the Minnesota Department of Human Rights investigates, disability discrimination is one of most common bases of discrimination, especially in employment.

It takes all of us to end ableism and each of us play a role in advocating for policies and practices that put accessibility at the forefront so that people with disabilities can thrive and live free from discrimination.

This day and every day, remember that disability rights are civil rights!
