If you or someone you know experienced discrimination based on race, sex, disability, sexual orientation, or another protected class, follow these helpful questions and answers.

1. What information can I prepare before reporting discrimination?

✍🏿Write down what happened.

🕝 Write down dates and times. 

📋 Write down the names of other people that were there.

📱 Keep info relating to calls, texts, emails, and other communications.

📅 Don’t wait! If the incident is covered under the state’s civil rights law, you have 1 year from the date of the incident to file a charge.

2. How do I report discrimination to the Department of Human Rights?

You can report discrimination with the Department by:

3. Do I need a lawyer to file a charge of discrimination?

📝 If you experienced discrimination and the incident is covered under the state’s civil rights law, you do not need to be represented by a lawyer to file a charge of discrimination.

4. What happens after reporting?

💡 Staff will determine if it’s covered under the Minnesota Human Rights Act, the state’s civil rights law. This chart outlines the process.
