Learning Centers that Work: UDL, Differentiation, and Independence in Deaf Education

Workshop description

Learning centers, or stations, are a powerful instructional framework for promoting student engagement, independence, and differentiated learning across grade levels. This interactive session will explore how learning centers can be intentionally designed to meet the diverse needs of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing students who use American Sign Language (ASL), spoken English, or a combination of communication modalities. Participants will learn how to apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to create accessible, standards-based learning experiences that support multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression. Presenters will share practical examples from elementary through high school classrooms across content areas, including literacy, mathematics, and other subjects. Attendees will examine strategies for reducing student dependence on adults, increasing self-directed learning, and designing center activities that align with students' strengths and learning needs. Participants will leave with tools and templates for planning, implementing, and adapting learning centers within their own educational settings.

Trevor Anderson

Trevor is the Special Education Coordinator at Metro Deaf School, where he supports school-wide special education compliance and due process. Prior to his current role, he served in a similar administrative position in Texas following six years as a high school social studies teacher at the Texas School for the Deaf. Trevor is passionate about making learning accessible, engaging, and meaningful for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing students through differentiated instruction and inclusive educational practices. Throughout his teaching career, he has implemented Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to support diverse learners and has shared his experiences and strategies with fellow Deaf Education professionals. Outside of work, Trevor enjoys spending time outdoors, reading memoirs, and making memories with his family.

Lauren Anderson

Lauren is a Deaf Education teacher and literacy specialist with nine years of experience serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in Texas and Minnesota. She earned her Master's degree in Deaf Education from Boston University and has taught in elementary classrooms while also supporting students and teachers through literacy-focused instruction and intervention. Lauren is passionate about helping students develop strong reading and literacy skills through accessible, engaging, and differentiated learning experiences. She enjoys collaborating with colleagues to create inclusive learning environments that foster student independence and academic growth. Outside of school, Lauren loves spending time with her two young daughters and exploring new adventures with her family.
