Scope of Nursing Practice Decision-Making Framework

The Scope of Nursing Practice Decision-Making Framework is intended to be used by nurses, facilities, boards of nursing and other stakeholders in determining whether specific activities, interventions, or roles are permitted under the nurse’s level of education, licensure, and competence while meeting the standards established by the nurse practice act and rules/regulations of each state or jurisdiction. In 2015, the Tri-council for Nursing, which included representatives from the American Nurses Association, American Organization of Nurse Executives, National League for Nursing and in collaboration with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing completed a methodical review of the literature and existing decision-making algorithms to develop the Framework. It was published in the October 2016 issue of the Journal of Nursing Regulation

The Board of Nursing adopted the Framework. The document may be accessed by following this link: https://www.ncsbn.org/decision-making-framework.htm.
