Refresher Course Criteria

Practical Nurse Refresher Course Faculty Qualifications *revised January 2025
  • Ensure practical nursing faculty have a baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university. 
  • Clinical faculty or clinical preceptor must have clinical experience or clinical teaching experience within the last three years.
Professional Nurse Refresher Course Faculty Qualifications *revised January 2025
  • Ensure professional nursing faculty have a graduate degree from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university. If the major of the graduate degree is not in nursing, the faculty must hold a baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing.
  • Clinical faculty or clinical preceptor must have clinical experience or clinical teaching experience within the last three years.
Course Content Guidelines
  • Review of Nurse Practice Act, rules, position statements
  • Determination of individual scope of practice
  • Review of the clinical problem solving process (systematic approach) for the provision of individualized, goal directed care and evaluation
  • Pharmacology review
  • Medication administration
  • Documentation, quality assurance and legal implications for nursing practice
 Course Hour Requirements
  • Theory
    • 60 hours minimum theory portion, including skills component.

  • Clinical *revised January 2025
    • 80 hours minimum clinical portion. Simulation can be utilized for no more than half the time designated for meeting clinical requirements.
