Economic Development

Minnesota Latinos are integral to economies in both the Twin Cities metro and greater Minnesota. As one of the fastest-growing minority groups, Latinos comprise an increasingly important segment of Minnesota’s workforce. Minnesota Latinos have the highest labor force participation rate in the state. Along with this, minority-owned businesses, and particularly female minority-owned businesses, are growing at a faster rate than the Minnesota average. However, these successes have not yet translated to higher incomes or more economic stability. Many Minnesota Latino families still struggle from below average household incomes and above average poverty rates.

To address this, MCLA will promote the following agenda:

  • Strengthen policies to prevent wage theft and support fair working conditions (Achieved)
  • Encourage innovative policy changes to allow for the use of an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in lieu of a Social Security Number in order to increase opportunities for Latino immigrants (Achieved in 2023)
  • Support a state bonding bill with significant allocations for affordable housing development across the state
  • Ensure that the state’s business climate remains favorable and just for all Minnesota small-business owners
