Sonia Reyes

Interim Executive Director
Sonia Reyes is an accomplished community advocate and leader with more than 22 years of experience advancing equity and supporting vulnerable populations. Originally from El Salvador, she has dedicated her career to empowering Latino and immigrant communities in the United States. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Intercultural Communication Studies from Simpson College and is pursuing an MBA in Marketing from the University of South Dakota. Recognized as a subject matter expert, she is a steadfast champion for community access, nondiscriminatory practices, and professional development, contributing her expertise to numerous organizations and advisory boards. 
 
Sonia is widely known for facilitating meaningful community dialogues, providing training to organizations, and increasing public awareness of critical state initiatives. She also partners with organizations to design strategic, culturally responsive campaigns that effectively engage Spanish-speaking audiences. 
 
Previously, Sonia served as the Director of the Office of Latino Affairs at the Iowa Department of Human Rights, where she also led the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs. In these roles, she directed statewide projects, guided program development, and advised state, local, and federal partners on issues impacting Latino and immigrant communities. She spearheaded major initiatives such as the Iowa Latino College Access Network, Iowa Latino Day on the Hill, the Iowa Association for Latinx Professionals, and the Latino Education Summit. Her leadership supported policy advancement, strengthened community engagement, and expanded access to resources and opportunities. 
 
A strong proponent of collaboration, Sonia actively participates in multiple organizations and advisory boards. Her extensive experience in strategic planning, public speaking, and community engagement makes her a sought-after presenter and consultant for workshops, conferences, and equity-focused initiatives.
