Resources for Afghan Refugees and Community Advocates

10/8/2021 10:53:04 AM

With the expected arrival of 50,000 Afghans in the U.S. through Operation Allies Welcome, Minnesota stands ready to resettle some of these individuals.

In compliance with Minnesota Statute 15.0145, the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans (the Council) supports Minnesota’s Afghan communities by working for “the implementation of economic, social, legal, and political equality” for these and other members of its constituency. As with most of the more than 40 communities the Council serves, Minnesota’s Afghan community is primarily refugee-experienced.

Friends and community advocates can help these new arrivals. The Minnesota Department of Human Service has put together a comprehensive overview of engagement and volunteer opportunities. Visit their website to review these opportunities and learn more.

Additionally, the Council supports the community advocates who serve arriving Afghan refugees by hosting regular community roundtables. To learn more or to be invited to future meetings, interested community members may email anjuli.cameron@state.mn.us.
