Shayna Karuman
Term: June 2025 to January 2028
Shayna Karuman is an organizer and artist with a background in architecture. Originally from Boston, she moved to Minneapolis to participate in local Asian Pacific movements and initiatives, bringing a deep passion for community, creative expression, and cultural preservation.
Ms. Karuman comes from a diverse background, with Chinese Indian ancestry and family originating from Malaysia and Singapore. During her tenure with the Council, she is eager to explore opportunities to connect youth to government and leadership opportunities. Ms. Karuman has been with the Council's Board since 2025.

The Malaysian community in Minnesota is estimated at 389 people. Many Malaysians came to Minnesota for education, career opportunities, or personal ties. Across Minnesota, Malaysians represent a diverse group, bringing multilingualism (Malay, Chinese dialects, Tamil), and religious traditions including Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, and Hinduism to our communities.
About the Singaporean Minnesotan community:
Minnesota is home to approximately 122 people with Singaporean heritage. Singaporeans contribute to the state’s diverse cultural tapestry, bringing a multilingual (English, Malay, Mandarin, Tamil) and multireligious (Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Taoism) heritage.
