Criminal Background Check (CBC)

According to Minnesota Statutes 214.075, each health-related licensing board, including the Behavioral Health and Therapy, shall require new applicants, individuals applying for reinstatement, and reciprocity to submit to a fingerprint-based criminal background check.

Note: Fingerprint-based criminal background check data can only be used for one purpose.  Previous criminal background checks completed for employment, military services, internships, licenses issued by other licensing agencies, or any other purpose cannot be accepted or used by the BBHT.

Under Minnesota Statutes section 214.075, subdivision 1, an applicant is exempt from submitting to a Criminal Background Check if the applicant previously submitted a state or national criminal history records check for a license issued by BBHT. Applicants who fall under this exemption will only be required to pay the non-refundable application and inital licensure fees.

Cost:

  • Effective January 1, 2019, the Criminal Background Check fee is $33.25 and is bundled with the licensure application fee.

Instructions:

  1. After you submit your licensure application, the Criminal Background Check Program will send you an email with information regarding how to complete the Criminal Background Check;
  2. Ensure your email address is correct in your application to receive this information;
