Apply for LPCC


LPCC License Requirements

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor is a Master's level independent license. The Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy (BBHT) has three license application methods for this license. Below, you will find a brief description of the requirements you need to meet in order to apply. License requirements are Minnesota Statutes section 148B5301, subdivision 1, subdivision 4, and Minnesota Statutes 148B.56 are as follows: 
 
Apply with General Method
  • Masters or Doctoral degree program in counseling or related field, from a program that is CACREP or CHEA accredited. 
    • The degree upon which a license application is based must include: 
      • At least 48 semesters or 72 quarter credits;
      • a minimum of 700 hours of supervised field experience;  
      • specific academic content in ten subject areas; and 
      • earned 24-semester credits in clinical coursework areas.  
  • Completion of 4,000 hours of supervised, post master's clinical practice; 
    • Supervision must be obtained at a rate of 2 hours per 40 hours of professional practice, for a total of 200 supervision hours. At least 50 percent of those hours must be individual, 1:1, supervision. 
    • 1800 direct client contact hours.
  • Successful completion of the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) administered. 
 
Apply by Conversion
  • Current and active LPC license issued by BBHT. 
  • Masters or Doctoral degree program in counseling or related field, from a program that is CACREP or CHEA accredited. 
    • The degree upon which a license application is based must include: 
      • At least 48 semesters or 72 quarter credits;
      • a minimum of 700 hours of supervised field experience;  
      • specific academic content in ten subject areas; and 
      • earned 24-semester credits in clinical coursework areas.
  • Completion of 4,000 hours of supervised, post master's professional practice which includes;
    • 200 supervision hours, 100 hours must be individual 1:1 supervision;
    • 1800 direct client contact hours;
    • Please note, a Licensed Professional Counselor who has completed 2,000 hours of supervised, post master's professional practice and has independent practice status only needs to document an additional 2,000 hours. 100 supervision hours (of which 50 supervision hours must be individual 1:1 supervision hours), and 900 direct client contact hours. The combined total hours of LPC and LPCC hours are 4000/200/1800.
  • Successful completion of the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).

 Apply by Reciprocity
  • An active license/credential in good standing in another jurisdiction;
    • License/credential requirements for that credential must be substantially similar to Minnesota's Licensure requirement. 
    • See the Reciprocity page for a detailed list of states that have already been approved by the board.
  • Before submitting a reciprocity application, please review the LPC/LPCC continuing education requirements. If your graduate degree was less than 60 semester credits, you will need to complete additional graduate credits within your first four years of licensure.
