Interactive Forest Resources Data Viewer

The MFRC Regional Forest Resources Data Viewer is an interactive dashboard that tracks forest resources trends across Minnesota's forested landscapes at statewide and regional scales. The data viewer brings together readily available data to:

  • View information on timber, habitat, tourism, water, carbon, and other resources
  • Explore and compare trends across ownerships and regions
  • Support MFRC regional landscape committees, agencies, Tribes, and the public in long-term forest planning and coordination

The Regional Forest Resources Data Viewer was developed with input from forest resources experts, including wildlife biologists, biometricians, and state, federal, and Tribal foresters. Stakeholder feedback helped to identify key indicators tracked through public data sources such as the U.S. Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. The Regional Forest Resource Data Builder was built through a contract and partnership with the Minnesota DNR Resource Assessment team.

Understanding Forest Resources

The Sustainable Forest Resources Act (Chapter 89A) defines forest resources broadly as "natural assets of forest lands." Forest resources encompass a wide variety of assets that contribute to the environment, economy, and human wellbeing. Fish and wildlife, herbaceous plants, timber, recreation, tourism, wilderness, aesthetics, air, water, climate, and cultural values are just a few of our forest resources.
